SEASICK STEVE

"Seasick Steve es un tipo de sesenta y tantos años que después de pasar la mayor parte de su vida moviéndose de un lugar a otro del mundo cogió su guitarra de tres cuerdas hecha de hojalata y se ha puesto ha tocar blues.

Su verdadero nombre es Steve Wold, a los catorce huyó de los maltratos de su padrasto, dejando atrás su casa, desde ese momento comienza un largo viaje en donde por largo tiempo nunca más llegaría a tener una residencia estable. Durante los años que duró su peregrinación la historia cuenta que, entre otras cosas, fue "cowboy", recolectó tabaco y trabajó en un circo hasta que se cruzó con el músico de blues KC Douglas, quien le enseñó a tocar la guitarra y de esa manera ganar algo de dinero por las calles de EE.UU.

Después de un tiempo en París y con dos matrimonios en el cuerpo SEASICK STEVE decide asentarse en Seattle, en pleno fenómeno "grunge", y a través de su pequeño estudio, llegó a producir mas de 80 discos (entre ellos a Modest Mouse).

Su salto a la música tuvo lugar en 2003, cuando se juntó con un par de músicos Noruegos y comenzaron a tocar un blues clásico, un blues que eriza la piel y hace pensar en viejas historias del Mississippi, un blues tocado con guitarras hechas por él mismo."

WOVEN HAND

David Eugene Edwards' solo project

"David Eugene Edwards pasó gran parte de su infancia viajando por las ciudades de Colorado junto a su abuelo, un predicador nazareno. A los 17 años se casó y dejó la iglesia de su abuelo para seguir un camino cristiano más individual, mientras éste le prometía una eterna condena.

En 1985, tras pasar por una seminal banda punk, empezó a tocar la guitarra en el grupo de Jeffrey-Paul Norlander, Pavilion Steps. En 1988, Norlander comenzó a tocar con los Denver Gentlemen, en un principio sólo con Edwards, para trasladarse un año después a LA. En el edificio de los Roger Corman's Hollywood Studios conoció al batería frances Jean-Yves Tola (estudiante de jazz clásico) y al bajista Pascal Humbert de la banda Passion Fodder. Tres años después vuelven a Denver, donde Edwards crea 16 Horsepower con Pascal Humbert.

En 2001 el grupo se da un respiro para volcarse en otros proyectos: David Eugene Edwards creará Woven Hand (cuyo nombre hace alusión al gesto de las manos en la oración) mientras el resto de la banda harán lo propio con Lilium.

Con el primer disco de WOVENHAND (2001), Edwards obtiene los aplausos de la crítica y captura la atención de Wim Vandekeybus, del reputado grupo de danza y teatro belga Ultima Vez , quien le ficha para el soundtrack de su próximo proyecto (los anteriores autores habían sido Marc Ribot y David Byrne). El resultado será un impresionante y aclamadísimo álbum titulado "Blush (The Original Score)" (solo disponible en la venta por correo de Glitterhouse) que más tarde desembocará en el más desarrollado “Blush Music” , que obtiene los máximos elogios de la prensa musical, Uncut a la cabeza."

"The Dexateens es una de esas bandas que saben hacer bonito lo sencillo. Rehuyen las grandes complicaciones para ofrecer canciones de calado medio capaces de satisfacer gustos dispares dentro de un contexto bien delimitado, que no limitado: lo suyo es a día de hoy un rock de tradiciones sureñas, de formas y tonos íntimos salpicados de algún que otro arrebato enérgico de filiación punk-rocker, la “Next Wave of classic Yank rockers”, como algunos han decidido llamar a todo esto ahora. Formados en Alabama en 1998, The Dexateens se curtieron en locales de ensayo y escenarios de mala muerte hasta debutar -discográficamente hablando- hace un par de años con un disco homónimo publicado por Estrus. Dime con quién andas y te diré quién eres… Atendiendo al pedigrí del sello se pueden entender los derroteros que por aquel entonces seguía el grupo: rock “renegado” con ínfulas punk y garage que le cantaba al perdedor, a aquel al que la vida le sonríe en contadas ocasiones, en fin, a cada uno de nosotros (¿o no?), pero con acento americano."

K.O PARA TU VANIDOSO MULTIPISTAS MENTAL

Inserto en toda la megalocura que puede significar preparar un examen de grado, frecuentemente trato de generar el tiempo necesario para escuchar un disco que desconozca antes de dormir, el proceso de selección para esto es bastante simple, un par de pinchazos entre canciónes y así olfatear hacia que lados va dirigido el sonido, la cosa es que ayer quería algo suave ambient-spacial-psicodelico (bueno casi siempre quiero eso) reviso los productos que entrego la red y encuentro este disco de PYRAMID, pinchazos al comienzo y al final del disco, perfectamente ajustado a mis necesidades "cerebro-espirituales", nada hacia presagiar lo que pasaría después,…audífonos listos, apago la lámpara y “Ángel de la guarda dulce compañía no me desampares de noche ni de día” todo según el plan, el disco avanza suavemente por pasajes plagados de ambient, ligera psicodelia y arreglos de postrock pitonizado (pues este disco es del año 75) hasta que llego al minuto 14.24, debo confesar que nunca he pegado ni recibido un combo (algún cajón de la bodega de mi casa debe ostentar mis DIPLOMAS DE MEJOR COMPAÑERO) pero esto fue como hacer las dos cosas al mismo tiempo, comienza una secuencia de perfecta improvisación, intensa, salvaje, psicodélica e irreverente frente al pentagrama , noqueado en mi ego y maravillado por una desprolijidad analógica con la fuerza suficiente de aturdir con un golpe mi vanidoso multipistas mental solo me dedico a disfrutar.

PYRAMID suma un disco a la gigantesca lista de bandas que constituye un instrumento capaz de producir certeza mas allá de toda duda razonable en lo relativo a lo visionarias que fueron las composiciones e improvisaciones de muchos músicos en los años 60´s y 70´s, quienes alimentan de forma directa e indirecta las influencias y sonido de un sinnúmero bandas actuales, lo quieran o no asumir sus miembros y sus fans.

Pido disculpas a los distinguidos visitantes del blog por no escribir tan seguido, pero el estudio me consume lentamente, espero que todo salga bien para “SER ALGUIEN EN LA VIDA” (gran frase que se repite incansable y promiscuamente en todos los discurso de graduación), paradojalmente pareciera que la gente a medida que consigue grados académicos en “MENOS ALGUIEN EN LA VIDA” se fueran convirtiendo.

Como sea, lo importante son los discos.

Imagínense lo que habría pasado si Jimi Hendrix hubiese vivido lo suficiente como para haber escuchado el “Master Of Reality” de Black Sabbath. Seguramente se habría vuelto loco con el peso de esos riffs y ese estilo tan denso y brutal, propio de los maestros ingleses. Por supuesto que esto es sólo una suposición, pero lo que no tiene nada de supuesto es que aquella demoledora mezcla sí se puede sentir en una banda en particular, y dicha agrupación tiene un solo nombre... Jada.

Con muchas tocatas y más de algún demo en el cuerpo, los santiaguinos conformados por Nestor Ayala (voz y guitarra), Francisco Alvarado (bajo) y Tito Veloso (batería) lanzaron durante la segunda mitad del presente año su primer álbum gracias al apoyo del sello Señor Pocholo Records. Dicha monstruosidad de placa se titula “Rockmachine” y es una demostración de fuerza bruta, un disco que respira lo más básico y duro del rock, revolcándose en un sonido que los liga a la creciente élite del stoner rock chileno, junto a grupos de la talla de Yajaira, Hielo Negro, Devil Presley y los igual de recientes Savannah.

Durante su recorrido de casi una hora y once canciones, “Rockmachine” hace temblar los muros con una potencia increíble. Es curioso que para ser su primer álbum la calidad de sonido sea tan buena, tal como un pedazo de carne cocido a la temperatura exacta, ni muy sobreproducido ni muy casero, conservando a la perfección la sucia, pesada y psicodélica atmósfera de Jada, lo que queda más que claro con el primer corte del disco, “Vagabundo”, culminada por las finas palabras del mismísimo Señor Pocholo (¿y con esa misma boquita come usted Pocholo?) las cuales suenan en varias partes del disco. Le sigue “Despiértame” y “Baby Let’s Go”, puro hard rock setentero de alto voltaje, con harto groove y riffs que hacen agitar la cabeza.

“Desnuda”, posee un toque épico que realmente impresiona y es, sin duda, una de las grandes canciones del CD. Muy de cerca, e iniciada con las delicadas palabras del Sr. Pocholo, viene “Al Choke”, de ritmo más acelerado y sin bajar la intensidad ni por un segundo... aunque en realidad, esa es una característica permanente en “Rockmachine”, tal como lo demuestran los siguientes temas “No Estás Sola” y la irreverente “La Reina”, ésta última siendo confirmada por el sitio web de la banda como la elegida para ser su primer video. El rock setentero de la banda arremete sin piedad con “Brujas”, la cual va unida por el feedback de la guitarra con la tremenda “Tu Pequeño Interior”, uno de los grandes cortes del disco, buena lírica y poderoso rock con un breve momento de paz que sólo es la calma antes de la tormenta de riffs. “Dama” sigue con la onda stoner rockera de riffs y atmósfera psicodélica, la cual vuelve a hacer saltar con “Agua Luz”, tema con toques aún más volados que los tracks anteriores, y que además es el encargado de cerrar el disco, aunque no por completo... si no entienden a lo que me refiero, entonces les sugiero que consigan este discazo y lo escuchen, porque algo pasa al final, pero eso lo dejo a su imaginación, no quiero estropear la sorpresa.

Si bien ante la etiqueta de stoner muchos pueden pensar que Jada es otra de esas bandas que sólo imitan a Black Sabbath, la realidad es que el grupo ofrece de principio a fin un disco genial, poderoso e intenso, que no resulta plano o monótono. “Rockmachine” representa el comenzar una carrera discográfica con el pie derecho, teniendo bien claro el camino que desean recorrer, sin dejar de lado la experimentación. Quién sabe, es posible que este trío llegue a liderar la escena rockera chilena o quizás no, pero al menos ya dieron el primer paso, y uno bien bueno.
